Health and Social Care students from SERC's Newtownards Campus recently visited the Maryland Health Care Centre of Distinction in Castlereagh to learn about the expert care that the Centre offers to its patients.
Located in Castlereagh, Maryland is an elegant purpose-built healthcare facility boasting 84 bedrooms, all naturally lit with spacious en-suite bathrooms. This state-of-the-art facility offers 24-hour care in a friendly environment whilst also being modern and efficient. Set in a natural enclosure, the centre offers therapeutic, sensory gardens, livestock meadow and wildlife supporting flora.
Students met with Director of Nursing Jackie Woods who provided them with a tour of the facility and provided an overview of the Centres speciality care services including dementia, elderly, physical disability and palliative care. Students also got the opportunity to ask any questions.
During their visit, students commented on the layout and the relaxed homely atmosphere which encourages residents to enjoy their stay and recognised their rights, privacy, dignity, choice, individuality and independence in a secure and friendly community environment.
SERC lecturer from the School of Health, Early Years and Adult Education Nikki Rainey said “This was a great opportunity for the students to witness healthcare practice first-hand. For students to get the opportunity to ask carers directly about their career paths helps them to see the exciting career opportunities that are available in the healthcare industry. We are extremely grateful to Maryland for welcoming and facilitating the students during their visit.”
