Fire and Security Engineering students from SERC have won Engineers of Tomorrow competition which took place over three days at London ExCeL recently. The competition pitted more than 60 young engineers – working in teams of two – against each other. The top five teams of the overall competition that takes place over IFSEC and FIREX are invited to the Security & Fire Excellence Awards in November, where the winning places will be announced.

Stuart Rankin, Deputy Head of School of Construction and Engineers Services at SERC said, “We were delighted to have 3 teams of students competing at the IFSEC  and FIREX  Engineers of Tomorrow (EoT) competition in the Excel arena in London. EOT promotes engineering apprenticeships to young people interested in a career in the electronic security sector. The students competed against each other in a live installation challenge.

He said, “Three Security Engineering teams competed in the IFSEC Engineering heat against teams from different regions. SERC Apprentices, Adam Smylie, from Lisburn and Scott McNab from Carrickfergus Level 3 and Level 2 Fire and Security System Apprentices respectively took 1st place. Both Adam and Scott are employed by Beacon Fire and Security.

“Two Fire Engineering teams competed in the FIREX Engineering heat against competition from the different regions.   SERC Level 2 Fire and Security Apprentices, Megan Davidson (H&J Martin) and Aislin McDaid (Atlas Group), completed the days heat taking 2nd place, narrowly missing the top spot to two mature apprentices from Scotland.

Finally, he said, “Feedback from judges and sponsors was extremely positive about the overall quality and skill set of the students representing Northern Ireland. The students are competing against the very best of their peers, so it is credit to them that they were placed. It proves the high standards that are demanded from the students in their chosen industry and it is a big credit to the Fire and Security provision within the region and the support provided by the employers and NIFSEF.”

The winners and runners up will find out in August if they are overall competition finalists.   If they are they will be invited to the Security & Fire Excellence Awards in November, where the winning places will be announced.
