Travel and Tourism Students from SERC's Downpatrick Campus have launched a new travel hub service  to give fellow students and staff the low-down on popular destinations.

Colum Toner, Lecturer in Travel and Tourism Operations said, “Students are encouraged to set up their own enterprise as part of project-based learning (PBL) at SERC.   This way they get to deal with real life scenarios and pick up skills, such as research, planning, communication, and teamwork as part of their work.

He added, “Our Level 2 and Level 3 Travel and Tourism students came up with the idea of setting up a travel hub which they will operate one day a week at each campus. Students and staff can come along to find out about destinations they are planning or thinking about travelling to.   The students will do all the research, sharing information out about all the highlights and perhaps a few hidden gems that they have gleamed from other travellers amongst the staff and student population here at SERC.

He concluded, “Our Travel and Tourism students are gearing themselves, ultimately, for work in the sector.   It is vitally important that they have, not only the qualifications, but the skills, confidence and perhaps that little bit of added knowledge that is going to make them stand out.   The enterprise encourages them to learn and find out about popular and emerging destinations, as well as what is on their doorstep, and to pass on their knowledge and recommendations.”

South Eastern Regional College are hosting a full-time open evening 2.00pm – 7.00pm on Wednesday 13 November at Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
