Congratulations to SERC Access student Arlene McCready on winning the Open College Network’s Further Education Learner of the Year Award 2020 and the Hilary Sloan Endeavour Award.

Arlene spoke about the award and her time at SERC, she said, “The last few years have been extremely tough. It is wonderful to think that with the amazing support of my tutors and class colleagues, I have been able to start on this fantastic academic journey. I hadn’t a clue at all that I had even been put forward for this award, so it means a lot that my tutors thought I deserved it. I love SERC. I left education when I was very young and when I came to SERC I had no qualifications and now I'm halfway through the Access course and loving every minute of it.”

Chris Mohan Curriculum Manager for SERC’s Access to Education said, “Congratulations to Arlene on a well-deserved award win. She is a talented student who has achieved great success with us over the past couple of years. The thing that stands out most about Arlene is her attitude. She has taken on all the challenges that life has thrown at her and used them as motivation for her own self-improvement.

He added, “She is an outstanding role model for anyone who is concerned that past experiences are a barrier to future success. The entire teaching team consider themselves privileged to have been involved in her achievements and look forward to seeing her reach all her goals and aspirations for the future.”
