Nine SERC staff teams competed for first place in the recent Step-Up Challenge as part of the college’s participation in a new Active Travel pilot programme for Downpatrick entitled Leading the Way in conjunction with the Colleges health and wellbeing, Mind Yourself programme.

Each team's challenge was to collectively get the most steps over a 3-week period, the team with the most steps at the end of the 3 weeks were declared the winners. The challenge started on the 10th of May and lasted until the 30th of May. Goodie bag prizes for the winning team members included Amazon and Marks & Spencer’s vouchers provided by the Leading the Way programme.

Over the past four months the Leading the Way pilot programme has been aimed at employees working in Newry and Downpatrick to encourage more people to commute to work by walking, cycling and staying active if working from home.

Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, has been working with SERC to help them embed active and sustainable travel into their organisation, by supporting employees to commute more actively or become more physically active at home. Leading the Way is delivered by Sustrans on behalf of the Public Health Agency and funded through the COVID-19 Recovery Revitalisation fund from the Department for Infrastructure, Department for Communities and Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Congratulations to team leader Tracey Davies, as well as group members Valerie Hamill Finlay, William Baker, Lisa Hawthorne and Roberta Poole, who were the winning group accumulating over 1955330 steps. The 9 SERC groups in total in the challenge accumulated over 11 million steps. A special congratulations to William and Lisa, who got married during the completion of the competition!
