Hayden Gilliland (22) from Lisburn found that SERC not only provided him with the relevant skills and qualifications to succeed in the Engineering industry, but they also opened doors and provided him with the opportunity to gain industry experience and contacts.

Hayden joined SERC at further education level studying Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Electronic Engineering before moving on to higher education where he studied a Foundation Degree (FD) in Mechatronic Engineering at the Lisburn Campus.

Speaking of the opportunities that SERC helped him with Hayden said “One thing that stood out to me during my time at the college was the number of opportunities that were provided by my lecturers. For example, through a visit organised by my lecturer I had the opportunity to work at Creative Composites on a summer placement. My lecturer also organised another opportunity for me which resulted in a part time placement at Leckey Design. Then I went to AB Pneumatics for my Work Based Learning Module, and they took me on for a full-time job after my course had finished.

“The opportunities that SERC has given me has been genuinely unbelievable. Despite the COVID lockdown there was no change to attitude from the lecturers or my colleagues; it was business as usual. They did everything despite the circumstances, I couldn’t have asked for anything more”

Hayden then spoke about his lecturers and his overall experience at the college “The lecturers have been absolutely fantastic, they presented a professional and consistent structure that I have observed, learned and will certainly apply when I go into the industry. I have made life-long friends being here.

Hayden concluded “I would recommend SERC to anyone, especially if they are looking for technical knowledge combined with the applied theory, in my opinion coming to SERC would be the best idea. Reflecting on my time at the college has really put it all into perspective, I really have been blessed with a truly amazing experience.”
