SERC Has Alice On Track to Master Business

Students can sometimes end up feeling locked out of the jobs and pathways that they want to follow if they have made the wrong choices or if things haven’t gone to plan.   However, you don't have to change your goals but it's worth looking at alternative routes to get to where you want to be.

After feeling she had chosen the wrong subjects for her A Levels, Alice Day (22) from Bangor left Glenlola Collegiate School Bangor and came to SERC where she began studying a Level 3 BTEC in Business Studies.  She later continued her educational path with SERC and enrolled on the BA Hons Business Studies degree (now BSc Business Management), accredited by Liverpool John Moores University.

Alice cites the care and attention from lecturers as one of the highlights of her higher education experience at SERC:  “The tutors always check in and make sure you're on track as they want you to get the best grade possible. I feel if I had gone to a larger university campus where the classes are bigger, I would not have been given the same amount of one-to-one guidance. I am sure it helped me reach my full potential in terms of grades and made my time on the course a lot less stressful."

Regarding studying for her degree at SERC, Alice says “I really enjoyed the course, right from start. I am really interested in business and the variety of business modules allowed me to find the career path I wanted to pursue. The smaller class environment was also great as everyone was able to get to know each other and we all became good friends.  If you aren’t sure about university but want to receive a higher education qualification, this degree course at SERC is perfect.”

Alice enjoyed the overall experience that SERC had to offer and got involved with extracurricular activities. She says “In first year, I was elected Student Union President in the Bangor Campus. I had already been involved in the Students’ Union during my BTEC business course the previous few years and really enjoyed it.

“During my time in the Students’ Union, I worked with the other officers to introduce the student mentoring program, took part in an NSPCC mentoring training day, and held a bake sale for charity. Being part of the Students' Union was a great experience, I was able to get to know and work with students from other courses to make the SERC campus a better place for all students."

Looking ahead to her options after gaining the degree, Alice is currently considering three offers to do a Master’s degree in subjects such as International Business and Marketing at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University.

Alice concludes: “I would recommend SERC to anyone. The atmosphere is less stressful than at school or, in my opinion, university, and all the tutors have your best interests at heart. SERC also provides additional opportunities, other than your course, to gain extra qualifications which will help you in the future.”
