SERC recently hosted a Fire and Security Careers Day, to raise awareness of the opportunities available to students in the Fire and Security Industry at the College’s Lisburn Campus.
At the event, attendees had the opportunity to chat to employers and key stakeholders in the Fire and Security Industry, asking any questions they had about the sector. They also were able to participate in demonstrations, including utilising a mobile CCTV training unit, testing communication networks, and learning how to use both wireless and hard-wired fire and security products. Additionally, attendees could register for a visit to a leading security manufacturer’s headquarters in Dublin for a guided tour of their facilities or sign up for a short health and safety course facilitated by the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme. The first WorldSkills Gold Medallist and Technicians who have recently completed their Fire and Security apprenticeship at the college attended the event, giving attendees the chance to hear from the apprentices themselves on how beneficial a fire and security apprenticeship at SERC was for them.
Over the past six years, SERC has grown and developed its fire and security apprenticeships provision. SERC apprentices have gained recognition for their tremendous achievements in national competitions including the IFSEC National Fire and National Security Competition.
On the event, SERC Fire and Security Lecturer Robin Hamill comments, “The aim of the event was to promote the fire and security industry as a professional and diverse career path to students considering their next steps, and to highlight the opportunities to work with local employers and market leading manufacturers in the sector. We received positive feedback from the employers, manufactures and the prospective students attending the event.
“We would like to thank employers Atlas World, Chubb, Diamond Systems, McIlwaine’s Security, Solutions for Systems, ESS, SFS, Beacon Fire and Security and G4S for their professional presence and support at the event, talking to students about the Fire and Security routes available at SERC. We would also like to thank manufacturers Hikvision, Pyronix, C-Tec, Nittan and Siemens for attending the event providing excellent information to prospective apprentices on the Fire and Secuity industry. The event was a great success.”
