Alexander Mercer (23), from Bangor, came to SERC to study Early Childhood Studies, which has allowed him to progress onward to university level study and is now working as a teaching assistant.

Alexander came to SERC after studying his A levels at Priory Integrated College, Hollywood. Alexander came to the College because of the large selection of courses and opportunities available, which helped him decide what we wanted to study. He enrolled on the Queen’s University Belfast Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies and studied at SERC’s Newtownards Campus.

Alexander is currently completing his undergraduate degree at Stranmillis University College, while working as a one-to-one teaching assistant in a local primary school.

On his time at SERC, Alexander comments, “My overall experience at SERC was amazing! I had very helpful tutors and I couldn’t have made a nicer group of friends from my time studying at SERC. You’ll meet amazing people, learn fantastic new things and you get great support from your tutors.

“I would love to give a huge shoutout to Sarah Darragh who was the course co-ordinator and Julie Turner who was a lecturer. Both ladies could not have supported, motivated and guided me through my course enough. I went through a very tough time towards the end of my course, and I could not have done without these two ladies’ support, that gave me the push I needed to give the best work that I can produce. I just want to say thank you so much for everything.”

Alexander concludes with a message to those thinking of studying at SERC. “I would definitely recommend SERC to anyone. If you are unaware of what you want to do or not necessarily confident that you want to go to university - go to SERC! The opportunities are endless, and they’ll help you find your way and what you want to do.”
