South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Level 4 and Level 5 Computing Students recently visited Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) as part of an ‘Experience Day’ event.

The Experience Day saw the students partake in several activities, including being taken on a tour of QUB’s Computer Science and Students Union buildings. Students were able to play ‘Turing Tumble’ - a new type of game in which players use ramps, crossovers, bits, interceptors, gears and gear bits to build marble-powered computers that can generate patterns, do logic, count, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and more, to solve logic puzzles. Students also had the chance to try Sphero BOLT - an app-enabled robotic ball that you can drive and code.

Talking about his experience of the day, SERC Computing Student Matthew Stuart said, “The Queens Experience Day was a positive experience which showcased numerous features that the university had to offer. After an initial talk, we were given free pizza and drinks before going on a tour around different buildings including the computer science department and the Students Union.

“Our tour guide was a member of the Students Union and was very helpful and positive. After the tour, we went back to the computer science building and became involved with some computing related activities. The people involved with the Experience Day were very welcoming and encouraging towards us, enabling the possibility for us students to consider a future with Queens University whilst providing a fun experience that was also very informative. I was very impressed with the facilities and investment towards creating an efficient environment for the students to learn.”
