College pride and vehicle know-how were at the fore of the recent Inter College Light Vehicle Competition, when apprentices from South Eastern Regional College (SERC), South West Regional College (SWRC), North West Regional College (NWRC) and Transport Training Services went head-to-head at SERC’s Downpatrick Campus.
First place went to Andrew Kenmore (20) from Newtownards, based at SERC’s Newtownards Campus and employed by Mercedes-Benz, Boucher Road.
Joint Second place went to Ryan Cullen, SWRC, employed by AL Services, Derrylee and Jack Francey, Transport Training Services, employed by Country Garage, Ballymena.
Hugh Kelly, Deputy Head of School of Construction and Engineering Services said, “This competition involved five apprentices from Level 3 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle) Apprenticeship NI putting their skills to the test in five tasks – engine management non-start; brake pad and disc measurement and replace; MOT; body electrical fault; and engine measurement – everyday tasks that they would be expected to manage at this stage of their apprenticeship in the workplace."
He added, “We have seen good competent workmanship, which made for a tight competition. We were delighted to host tutors and the apprentices at our Downpatrick Campus. I want to congratulate all the apprentices who travelled to SERC for the Inter College competition and put themselves to the test against their peers, each of whom has won their own college or training organisation heat.”
