Paul Scullion, 49, from Bellaghy, left school following his GCSEs and has been working with vehicles ever since. He is self-employed and runs his own business, PJS Auto Engineering, in the town.

He says, “It was while I was working for Bosch in Dublin that a colleague told me about the IMI Level 4 Skills in Diagnosing Motor Vehicle Faults Where No Prescribed Process or Format is Available, at SERC. I did a little bit of research to find out more about the course and then enrolled.”

He says, “Basically, I was so impressed with the teaching and the courses on offer at SERC for anyone working in the motor vehicle industry, I have been coming back to the college every year since 2020 to top up my skills. I also completed the IMI Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies and am halfway through the Light Vehicle - Master Technician.

“The teaching and the facilities are fantastic. Plus, it has been great to meet other people working in the industry from all over the country, no doubt testament to the course and the teaching. For anyone working with vehicles, I would have no hesitation recommending SERC. There are a range of programmes and if you speak to the tutors they will advise you where to start based on your skills and experience and then you can upskill from there. I have no doubt I will be back again as new courses are offered. It is important for me and my team to be prepared for the changes that are coming through the industry.”
