Jack Donnelly (17), from Lisburn, was interested in getting a trade and was set on plumbing.  Although he didn’t get the grades he needed for his first-choice apprenticeship route, he opted for the Level 2 NI Traineeship in Maintenance Operations (Construction), which would help take him in the right direction.

Speaking about his decision to come to SERC, Jack said, “We had someone from SERC visit our school, St Patrick’s in Lisburn, who spoke about the different trade programmes and pathways. I also went along to an open evening which was great as I got to see the facilities and speak to the different tutors about my options for trades, including plumbing."

He continued, “Unfortunately, I missed out on one of my GCSEs, but I was keen to move on. I had spoken to the tutors about different options and they mentioned the Level 2 NI Traineeship in Maintenance Operations (Construction), so I knew this course would give me the opportunity to progress and give me time to do my resit.”

"The course is very hands-on and practical, and I have really enjoyed this aspect of the course as it suits my style of learning. I have got to try plastering, painting, tiling, bricklaying, paving, plumbing and joinery and learnt about health and safety in the workplace. It is a great course if you know you want a trade but are not sure which one to follow, but I am still very keen on the plumbing route.”

He continued, “I am keen to do an apprenticeship in Plumbing but have also applied for the Level 2 NI Traineeship in Plumbing as I can also move on to an apprenticeship from there.”

He concluded, “College is different from school. I only knew one other person on the course, but you soon settle in and get to know everyone over the year.”
