If you haven’t been glued to coverage of the spectacular Paralympic Games perhaps you need a little motivation by way of SERC student, Deaten Registe.

The young man from Dungannon, will make his Paralympic debut in Paris on Monday 2 September in the SB14 100 Breaststroke (Heat 2, from 9.33am GMT). Deaten is completing the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Sport, Coaching and Fitness at SERC’s Lisburn Campus.

Colin Atkinson, Principal Lecturer, School of Art and Sport at SERC said, “Deaten is a dedicated athlete, and we wish him every success in Paris and cannot wait to see him in action.”

He added, “Deaten’s training commitments required travel across Europe and Australia over this past year so our programme for elite sports provided the flexibility required for athletes competing at this level to continue their studies alongside their training.”

Deaten’s first major international performance was at the 2024 Para Swimming European Championships in Madeira where he was placed 4th in the 100m Breaststroke final.

Also competing next week is swimmer - and SERC alumnus, Barry McClements, from Newtownards - who is scheduled to compete on 3 and 9 September.

We wish Deaten, Barry, and all the competitors best of luck!
