Last week, students from Level 3 Beauty Therapy and Level 3 Spa Therapy put their pampering skills to the test in the ‘Level 3 Beauty Therapist of the Year’ inter-campus competition, which took place in the Shadeka Beauty Salon at SERC’s Bangor campus.

Six SERC students from the Bangor, Downpatrick, and Lisburn campuses, were tasked with demonstrating their expertise in general beauty therapy and specialist areas such as advanced body and facial treatments. First place was awarded to Megan Connolly (Bangor campus), second place to Jody Garrett (Bangor campus), and third place to Kyra McCann (Downpatrick campus).

Fiona Quinn, Deputy Head of School, Performing and Creative Arts, SERC says:

“I am absolutely thrilled to share the exciting results of the ‘Level 3 Beauty Therapist of the Year’ inter-campus competition, in which Beauty students from across the three campuses took part in. A huge congratulations to our six finalists, with Kyra McCann awarded third place, Jody Garrett awarded second place, and first place and overall winner awarded to Megan Connolly.”

“The competition focused on the role and tasks of a beauty therapy practitioner, carrying out a range of services which reflect both current and traditional standards, plus current industry requirements. The finalists were tested on health and safety, professionalism, client care and communication skills and were expected to demonstrate exceptional levels of skill and creativity."

“Our industry expert and judge for the day was Judith Hogg, a former student and Head Therapist at The Culloden Spa. The judging criteria consisted of professional demeanour, safe working practices, effective interaction with the client, high level of skill and dexterity, management of time and ergonomic working conditions. A huge thank you to Judith for taking the time to judge the competition and giving the students constructive feedback.”

“I’d also like to extend my thanks to all of our Level 3 Beauty Therapy and Spa Therapy competitors; it was excellent to see them participate in this competition with so much enthusiasm and professionalism. I would also like to thank the beauty therapy lecturers and technicians for their support, guidance and preparation. A huge team effort was evident and led to the great success of the competition.”

“A huge thanks also to our industry experts who were judges at the pre-competition events, Fiona Parker who was a past Level 3 Spa Therapy student, and now owner of 'Beautifa' Newcastle; and Joan McCabe, past Level 3 Beauty Therapy student and now owner of 'The Bronzing Room' Bangor. Both salon owners spoke to the students about their journey at SERC to becoming salon owners, encouraging the students to follow their aspirations.”

Judith Hogg, Head Therapist, Culloden Spa comments:

“I am a former SERC student and qualified for my Level 3 in Beauty Therapy back in 2015. I was very lucky to get a position straight away in the Culloden Spa, and over the past eight years, I have progressed to become Head Therapist and trainer. It was an absolute joy to be back in Bangor to judge the ‘Level 3 Beauty Therapist of the year’ competition and meet the students who took part. As part of the competition, I judged the girls as they carried out neck and shoulder massages and galvanic facials. They all did really well and should be very proud of their achievements. Well done to the three worthy winners Megan, Jody, and Kyra.”
