Several South Eastern Regional College students recently gained work placements though the Nuffield Future Researcher programme, including Paul French, eighteen, from Lisburn.

Paul is currently studying Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science at SERC Lisburn Campus. Paul notes that he has a keen interest in science, particularly biology; “Science (specifically biology) was my favourite subject from 1st year through to 5th year mainly because I thought it was fascinating and the way my teachers conveyed the information was consistently captivating and it encouraged me to learn more. My aspirations for the future are to study Biology at a university level and begin a career in environmental biology.”

Paul found out about the Nuffield Future Researcher Programme through his tutor. Paul’s project on the programme is to produce a field study on farming practices regarding pollinators and is currently doing independent research to gain more background knowledge on agri-environment schemes to promote biodiversity. On the Nuffield Future Researcher Programme, Paul says, “I would 100% recommend it to anyone else who is given the opportunity as thus far it has been interesting and engaging.”

Paul concludes with reflecting on his experience at SERC; “I would not be in the position I am today if it were not for my tutor’s encouragement and guidance. With the incredible facilities and student care provided, such as the counsellors or the many mental health days, SERC not only feels like a place of study, but it also feels like a safe place to become whatever you are aspiring to be. So in conclusion SERC gave me the push I needed to start my scientific career path and for that reason and the many other positive attributes I mentioned previously I can definitively say that SERC is an amazing place of study and I am glad to be a part of it.”
