Several South Eastern Regional College students recently gained work placements though the Nuffield Future Researcher programme, including Naara Araujo, eighteen, from Bangor.

Naara is currently studying Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences at SERC and began studying at the college after her A levels with the aim of progressing to university. She comments, “I would like to get into Queens University or Ulster University to study biomedical sciences, radiography or radiotherapy and oncology.”

Naara began the placement in June and worked it remotely online; “My subject is cardiovascular disease and it’s factors. It is a very important thing to study as cardiovascular disease is one of the main causes of death in UK, alongside with cancer. I heard about Nuffield by my teachers at SERC. I definitely recommend it as it gives you more experience and shows you what you should expect in the future if you were to go down the path you got to study in your placement.”

Reflecting on her time at SERC, Naara concludes, “Coming from a grammar school background SERC was a nice change as it’s way more hands on. The teachers are all friendly and as the time goes by you genuinely start to feel like you are part of a family. The careers facility at SERC is also really helpful at matching you with work experience or even volunteering work.”
