Apprentices from across Northern Ireland have put their skills to the test at the annual Auto Light Vehicle Inter-college competition, hosted at South Eastern Regional College’s Newtownards Campus.
The apprentices, Ciara Duggan from North West Regional College (NWRC), Calum O'Neill and Jack Stewart from South Eastern Regional College (SERC), Brody Duffy from Southern Regional College (SRC) and Cain Treanor from South West College (SWC) are all completing the Level 2/3 Apprenticeship NI in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Light Vehicle).
The apprentices were tested on five key technical skills that any mechanic must master to succeed, including brake disc runout, engine management fault, electrical faults, engine measurement and MOT preparation.
The standard of the apprentices’ work was extremely high throughout the competition, highlighting their skill and desire to take to the top spot.
SERC apprentice Calum O'Neill took first place, with second place going to Jack Stewart also from SERC and Cain Treanor from SWC taking third place.
This is the third year in row that a SERC apprentice has claimed the top spot at the competition.
Each of the apprentices received prices which were kindly donated by Colin Adams Motorparts and Network Auto Store.
Marc Foster, Motor Vehicle Technician at SERC said, “We were delighted to welcome the apprentices and their tutors to SERC for a much-anticipated competition.”
He continued, “The apprentices all displayed a very high standard of skill and experience which was evident in the final scores across all participants.”
He added, “Many congratulations to each of the apprentices who all have very bright futures in the industry.”
