Neurodiversity week takes place from 18 March to 24 March 2024.

Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in different ways. It refers to the diversity of all people though it is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities. A lot of neurodiverse conditions will be considered as a disability and fall under the protected characteristics of the Equality Act (2010).

Supporting every individual to perform at their best and to reach their full potential means taking people’s needs and differences into account. Research from the ADHD Foundation suggests that 1 in 5 people are neurodivergent, so learning to accommodate everyone is not just ‘nice to have' but is critical for their success.

There are several strengths when promoting neurodiversity observed in people who are neurodivergent, including enhanced focus time, analytical thinking, calmness under pressure, depth of knowledge, multi-tasking, attention to detail, and better thinking outside the box.

When someone discloses any neurodivergent conditions, it’s beneficial to have a meeting to understand exactly how their working life or education is affected. This conversation provides an open space to discuss any helpful adjustments and supportive measures that could be put in place to help that person reach their potential.

To celebrate Neurodiversity Week, a calendar of events will be running online with over 80 speakers coming together to share their live experiences across a variety of neurodiversity topics, along with the expertise of professionals and advocates in the field.

Sessions range from an introduction to neurodiversity to creating a neuro-inclusive classroom. To access the full list of sessions click here and click on the relevant session(s) to book your place. Sessions will be recorded, if you register for an event and are not able to attend at the allocated time you will be sent the recorded session.
