Selina McBride (19), from Newtownards came to SERC following her GCSEs.  After trying some other courses, she enrolled on the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music Industry Skills and says the course is helping her fulfil her potential as she strives towards a career in the music industry:

“I first came to SERC in 2020, as I had friends who recommended the College to me. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study, so I tried a few different courses I was interested in – first engineering, and then media. These courses were not the right options for me, so I spoke to the careers advisors at SERC about enrolling on a course I would like more. I was told about the Level 2 Music Industry course, and it really stood out to me because I liked the feel of the course and what I would be studying.”

Selina adds, “So far, it has been wonderful in helping me develop new skills, discover different styles and genres of music, and providing me with the freedom to be creative in different projects and live performances. SERC’s facilities, particularly the performing studio and recording area, have been fantastic in helping me learn how to produce music and how to use different software to edit it. The mix of both the theory and practical work make it a really enjoyable learning environment to be part of.

“My tutor Bruce McClements has been extremely supportive in guiding myself and my classmates through the course content. It is great to be taught by someone with a lot of experience in the music industry.”

Selina concludes “After I complete the Level 2 course, I would like to progress and continue my studies at SERC onto the Level 3 music course. SERC has been extremely beneficial so far in providing me with a fantastic level of support and helping me get on track to fulfil my potential in the music industry. I would highly recommend anyone interested in this pathway to explore their options at the college- it is a great place to start and you won’t regret it.”
