Here at SERC we are keen to promote internal colleagues to allow staff the opportunity to get to know each other and put a face to the name, particularly due to the size and scope of SERC.  With this in mind, “Meet your Colleagues” is a fun Q and A exercise to help raise awareness of people’s roles within SERC and allows you to get to know more about your fellow colleagues.

This week's "Meet Your Colleague" features Ruth Annett. Ruth is one of the Assistant Careers Officers within the Careers Department at SERC.

1. What does your role at SERC involve?

As an Assistant Careers Officer, based in Lisburn and Downpatrick campuses, my role involves providing students and external clients with careers information, advice and guidance. We can see people at any age or stage of their professional and educational journey so it’s a fascinating role.

2. Tell us a bit about your background?

It’s pretty varied! I have a BA in Sculpture, where I picked up some handy welding and metal work skills. I’ve made a submarine out of bathtubs and a canyon from carpet, and I truly believe the arts can change the world.

As well as my work in careers guidance I have worked in secondary education, politics, hospitality, coordinated multi-disciplinary arts research conferences, and cleaned hotels.

3. What 3 words best describe you?

Creative, perceptive, optimistic.

4. What do you like to do outside of work?

If it involves forests, mountains, rivers or the sea I’m there. I especially love wild swimming, though that can be challenging at this time of year. Art galleries and cinemas are my favourite indoor places.

5. If you could swap jobs for a day who would it be and why?

I’d be a scenic artist on a Michel Gondry project.

6. List 3 items you would want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?

Semaphore flags, a sea kayak and my dog.

7. What is your favourite film and why?

The Science of Sleep. Its surreal, beautifully imperfect and dreamy.

8.  Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?

West coast of North and South America. I’d buy a van, a canoe and a gallon of suncream, start in Alaska and work my way down the Pacific coast.
