Here at SERC we are keen to promote internal colleagues to allow staff the opportunity to get to know each other and put a face to the name, particularly due to the size and scope of SERC.

This week’s “Meet your Colleagues” features David Bickerstaffe. David is a Customer Service Assistant, working within Customer & Community Services here at SERC.

What does your role at SERC involve?

My role at SERC involves dealing with the public in a number of ways; I sort mail from the public and to staff members, I answer any queries people phoning in might have, I also handle certificates that are handed to students as well as other more general office duties.

Tell us a bit about your background?

When I left Rupert Stanley College my 1st job was in the Civil Service; in Lisburn Training Centre back in August 1991, then I joined Lisburn Institute of Further & Higher Education College in September 2000 which is now known as SERC.

What 3 words best describe you?

Helpful, Kind, Social

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love the North Coast and take trips up there whenever I can, usually staying for a week. Its very relaxing up there, especially near the seaside where I can hear the waves of the sea while going on a walk or sitting watching the world go by. l also stayed in Blair’s Holiday Park Portrush in a static caravan and I also use a house in Portstewart on the NW200 course for race week and other times through the year I also own two classic cars, both Ford Granada’s. Taking them to car shows is always fun.

If you could swap jobs for a day who would it be and why?

Motor companies are always making new cars, and since I am into my cars, I would like to be the person to test drive them and try them out.

List 3 items you would want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?

  • Lifetime supply of steak and chips
  • Phone
  • Tent

What is your favourite film and why?

I really like the Carry-On films, they’re old but I think they’re hilarious. I also enjoy the Fast and Furious films for the action and cars.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?

I’m not too big on travelling so I honestly can’t say where I would like to go, but in the past, I enjoyed going to England and France.

What is your top tip for keeping healthy (either physically or mentally) during the lockdown?

Make sure to stretch your legs and take a small minute break to refocus yourself if you are getting stressed.
