For SERC Lisburn students only
What does it involve?
As part of this eco competition, you:
- Email gogreen@serc.ac.uk to request a competition entry form – this includes info RE submitting your piece and instructions to take a BEFORE & AFTER PHOTO.
- Take an item of clothing you no longer wear (or something from a charity shop).
- Repair, revamp or transform the item to give it a second life! Or upcycle the item into a clothing accessory!*
*The competition is about getting a second life out of the clothes we no longer wear -- that may mean a simple repair, or it could be a customisation technique to bring the item on trend or to fit your personal taste. You might also turn your item into a clothing accessory such as a tote bag, hat, scarf, or belt! The important thing is that you or someone else can wear the item again.
We are eager to have a range of pieces, from the simple to the more elaborate, to showcase the different ways that an item can be given a second life.
Please note, the final item should be an item of clothing or clothing accessory. While we definitely encourage other types of upcycling, we cannot accept furnishings or decorations on this occasion -- the competition is about making the clothes wearable again!
Why get involved?
- By taking part in the competition, you are supporting the sustainable fashion movement.
- Did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest cause of industrial water pollution in the world? It also creates approximately 10% of global carbon emissions. That’s more than the aviation and shipping industries combined!
- A new movement for getting a second life out of our unwanted clothes has begun. By taking part in the competition, which includes an exhibition of shortlisted items, you will be raising awareness of the importance of reducing and reusing creatively.
What can you win?
- Island Arts Centre Exhibition - Shortlisted items will be showcased in a dedicated exhibition during European Week for Waste Reduction (19th – 27th November). This will include a launch night with a range of distinguished guests. Photographs of all items entered in the competition will be displayed (pending entry numbers).
- Clothing category: 1st prize (£100), 2nd prize (£50), 3rd prize (£25) - If you repair, revamp, or transform your item so it can be worn again, you can enter the clothing category.
- Accessory category: 1st prize (£100), 2nd prize (£50), 3rd prize (£25) - If you transform your item of clothing into an accessory such as a hat, bag, scarf or belt, you can enter the accessory category. Please note, only clothing/fashion accessories can be entered in this category. We cannot accept house decorations or furnishings.
