Lewis Knox, 20, Newtownards, Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprentice, details how SERC is helping him achieve the qualifications he needs to become a qualified professional in his field of interest – electrical installation.

After his GCSEs, Lewis completed his A Levels and then attended a SERC Open Day to find out more information on the apprenticeships at SERC, Lewis comments, “I came in on the open day and had my mind set on an apprenticeship and got the opportunity to see what it was like to study different trades. I always had an interest in working in a trade and found electrical installation different and interesting.”

On his course at SERC, Lewis comments, “I think SERC has a friendly environment and when I transitioned from school to SERC it was easy to make new friends. My tutor was Steven Donnelly and he’s been great the 4 years I’ve been in my apprenticeship. It has been a completely different style of learning and support from school and Steven always made it as easy as possible for the class and made sure everyone understood. I am grateful for having Steven as my Tutor for the 4 years. I currently work for Phil Co Electrical. I aim to be a qualified electrician and sit my final exam soon, but I also want to better myself and complete the testing and inspection course afterwards”.

Lewis concludes, “If you're just out of school like I was and did not really know what you wanted to do, I would say take your time and explore everything that interests you and not to rush into it or pick anything for the sake of it. An apprenticeship is a long course and unless you know that is what you want to do it can be hard to stick at it. I think SERC has been good, and my tutors have been great.”
