Two dedicated Health and Social Care Apprentices studying at SERC are continuing their education through remote learning while working full time to meet the demands for keyworkers needed through the support of SERC Training Consultant, Olive Watson and their employers.
Despite their crucial roles and the pressure on their employers in the health and social care sector as a whole; Shannon Kenna, a Care Assistant at Greerville Manor in Newtownbreda and Summer Begley, a Care Assistant at Lisadian House in Hillsborough, still find time in their hectic week to focus on their studies.
Through online learning, Shannon has been able to meet with Olive and cover essential topics such as safe-guarding and the protection of adults in a social care setting, whilst Summer was able to submit assignments on employment rights and responsibilities and started a new unit which focuses on the role of health and social care worker.
During these stressful and uncertain times, Olive was extremely supportive and flexible in her schedule to accommodate her keyworker apprentices to ensure her students can fulfil the requirements of the course and feel confident in their knowledge and abilities.
Victoria Boyd, SERC Training Programme Manager commented, “Our Training Consultants at the College deliver Work-Based Apprenticeships that are specifically designed around each employers’ specific needs and most, if not all of the delivery and assessment of learners is normally done in the workplace.”
“With the removal of face-to-face delivery due to lockdown; I am thrilled to see that our Training Consultant Olive, has ensured her students receive the support they need in these extraordinary times. Her apprentices have had to quickly adapt to online delivery of their programme through use of SERC’s innovative teaching techniques and Microsoft Teams software to interact remotely.
She concluded, “Olive went above and beyond the typical call of duty to deliver Apprenticeship training sessions to both students on Sunday 5 April – the only day the ladies were free from work to follow their studies. It is a great example of the dedication from the keyworker apprentices, Shannon and Summer, and their employers to their apprenticeship which is fully supported by our staff here at SERC who recognise the critical job they are performing as frontline keyworkers.”
