Level 3 Health and Social care student Cassie Munro from SERC's Newtownards Campus is celebrating after being shortlisted for the British Education Awards 2019.

Now in its third year, the awards recognise the outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements of students – and is the only event in the UK that celebrates individual success on a national platform. The awards will take place at the Hilton Hotel Manchester on 31 January 2019.

The former Bangor Academy pupil and Bangor local, first came to SERC after her AS Levels to study Early Years. But after deciding to re-enrol at SERC to study Health and Social Care, Cassie found her calling in the health sector, setting her sights on the future to gain as much hands-on experience through placements in the health trust before attending university.

Outside of college, Cassie is a volunteer with St John Ambulance helping with fundraising as well as learning life saving skills.

22-year-old Cassie was nominated by her tutor Nikki Rainey who said: “I nominated Cassie as she is a consistently hard working, conscientious and motivated young woman. Indeed, she is an exemplary health student who is well-organised, focussed and approaches all aspects of her work in a mature and responsible manner.

“Over the last two years, I have found Cassie to be a most pleasant, likeable and sociable student who is well mannered and has a genuine consideration for others and has excellent rapport with her fellow students and is very highly thought of by her tutors.”

The red-carpet occasion will see candidates nominated in four categories: GCSE or Scottish National, A-Level or Scottish Higher, Vocational and Degree – with the winners in each category and region to be announced at the ceremony. Awards for Special Achievement will also be presented on the night.

Cassie said “It’s so amazing and I never expected this. I am delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist. I feel my hard work is paying off and I really look forward to getting dressed up for the event. I can’t thank my tutors enough for supporting and nominating me for this prestigious event.”

SERC Deputy Head of School for Health, Early Years and Adult Education Marjorie Crooke said “I am delighted for Cassie. She has put a great deal of effort into learning and perfecting her skills both in and outside the classroom. The British Education Awards are a fantastic opportunity for students to gain recognition for their hard work and determination in pursuit of excellence which will ultimately benefit them in their future careers. I wish Cassie the very best of luck.”
