South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Year 1 Health and Social Care students from Newtownards Campus were invited to a tour of The Peninsula care home in Newtownards.

The Peninsula, which opened recently, is a care home which facilitates residential, nursing, dementia, respite, and palliative care. The home invited the Health & Social Care students to their facilities for a tour while they were taking part in the Refreshers Careers Fair in the SERC Newtownards Campus.

The students were taken on a tour of The Peninsula by its nurse manager, and got to view facilities such as bedrooms, living room areas, dining areas, a salon, a sensory room, a bar, a garden, a clinical room for nurses, a kitchen and a nurse station, giving the visitors a detailed impression of what a modern care home looks like. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions and meet some of the residents in sitting areas throughout the tour.

On the trip, SERC Lecturer in Health and Social Care Nikki Rainey said, “It was such a beautiful care home and is how older people should be living and treated, in five star accommodation. The students were so impressed with all the new facilities. At present we have a Year 1 Health & Social Care student working at The Peninsula and it was a great opportunity for the other students to obtain application forms to apply for care jobs over the summer, which will be beneficial for UCAS applications and CVs as the students move on to work and higher education.”
