The 2020/21 academic year saw the introduction of Animal Management to the higher education offerings at South Eastern Regional College (SERC). Originally only available in the Bangor Campus, the Higher National Certificate (HNC) is open for enrolment at the Lisburn Campus for September 2021 entry.
Jonathan Cash curriculum manager for the School of Applied Science and Animal Care said “It’s great to expand the course and begin offering it in the Lisburn Campus. We understand that progression to the Higher National offerings of Animal Management meant travelling to the Bangor Campus and this may not have been easily accessible for some of the students. Being able to offer the course in Lisburn will hopefully provide more of our Level 3 students and external applicants the opportunity to achieve the HNC in Animal Management.”
Speaking about the course Jonathan said, “The HNC offerings at SERC provide a Higher Education pathway for Animal Management students. The purpose of the Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Animal Management is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the Animal Management sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.”
He added, “Successful completion of the HNC in Animal Management prepares you for employment in the animal industry and may provide you with the opportunity to complete a further year leading to the Level 5 HND in Animal Management. With experience, you could progress to access any number of jobs within the animal industry, there are many fields of study with a wide variety of applications. Industries such as: veterinary, animal welfare, agriculture and equine study, zoological and behavioural studies. Successful completion of the HNC may also enable you to progress to further study on the first year of a degree course.”
Current HNC Animal Management student Sian Walton said "The Level 3 and HNC Animal Management courses at SERC have allowed me to develop a wide range of vital skills that are necessary for working within the animal industry. I am looking forward to seeing where my qualification takes me, I’m hoping it helps me towards my dream job which would be working in exotic animal rehabilitation."
