SERC Alumni hys McCleneghan BEM, Bethany Firth OBE, and Barry McClements

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are just about to begin and we would like to take this opportunity to wish SERC Alumni, Rhys McCleneghan BEM, Bethany Firth OBE, and Barry McClements the best of luck as they represent Team NI in their respective categories.

Rhys, who completed his BTEC Level 3 Sport course at SERC’s Bangor Campus in 2018, is the reigning gold medallist for the Commonwealth Games Pommel Horse competition after a very impressive showing at the 2018 games. Rhys will kickstart the defence of his crown today at 12:00.

Bethany, who studied on the Elite Athlete Programme - Pearson BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Sport at SERC, is a highly decorated Paralympian, who after a very successful Paralympic games in 2021 took her Paralympic medal tally to six gold and three silver. Bethany will be competing in the Women’s 200m Freestyle at 11:09.

Barry studied the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport at SERC Bangor campus. Barry has been confirmed to be on the Irish Paralympic swim team. He has been noted as one of the strongest swimmers in Ireland and consistently excellent since he joined the Para Swimming squad after the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He will be competing in the Para Swimming Men’s 100m Back competition at 19:48.
