Remote learning may have been a relatively unknown concept for many prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, but the transition from classroom to online learning has been met with relative ease for many at South Eastern Regional College, and through the use of technology, not only are classes still running, but so are group projects.
SERC student Chloe Finlay 19, from Bangor spoke about moving to remote learning for her BA Business Studies degree course. She said, “I think remote learning has been working well, especially with the technology available and software such as Microsoft Teams. It took me a while to get used to online learning as my education experience so far has been classroom based.
“We started prepping for a presentation while in a classroom setting, and as part of the transition over to online, we scheduled group calls to make sure everyone was happy and that everyone could give feedback and contribute, which was easy to do through Microsoft Teams.
Chloe also spoke about being able to study a degree at SERC. “I’m glad I was able to study my degree so close to home, especially now with the pandemic. Being close to home was so much better for me, I think I would have struggled, had I been studying elsewhere.
“I studied my A-Levels at Bangor Academy and some of them where through SERC, so I had the chance to I speak to the tutors about the higher education courses offered at the College and it caught my interest. The lecturers make me feel so comfortable. I think if I was in uni, I’d feel lost as the class sizes tend to be much bigger, while at SERC the classes are much smaller and I feel like you get a lot of one-to-one opportunities with your tutor so there is plenty of support when you need it. I feel if I had gone to uni I wouldn’t be doing as well as I am at SERC.
Chloe concluded, “Whenever I started the degree, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do career wise - I chose the degree because the subject interested me and I knew there would be plenty of pathways for work. As the year has gone on, we’ve had lots of people visit to share their experiences with us. I’ve been inspired and want to create my own business one day. It was really helpful hearing from people who started their own business, not only for inspiration, but the advice they gave on how they started up their business and learning from the mistakes they made and what they would do differently, it’s all very helpful.
