Foundation Degree in Computing Leads Chris to Fix IT at SERC

Chris Wiggins (22) from Comber is currently studying on the Foundation Degree in Computing at SERC’s Bangor Campus. 

Chris’s route to Computing was not straightforward, he said, “I knew that I didn’t want to do A levels after my GCSEs as I felt that progressing to college would give me more freedom of choice. I enrolled on Art and Photography at SERC, but it wasn’t the course for me so, after speaking with my course tutor, I was able to change to the Level 3 in IT and I haven’t looked back. The help and guidance at SERC have been tremendous. 

“Following the Level 3 in IT, I progressed to the Foundation Degree in Computing and I am really enjoying the course.  The practical application of IT solutions is one of my favourite aspects. 

“I am also involved in a student enterprise called FixIT.  The plan was to offer our IT services to other students, and perhaps local community groups, but because of COVID we have been unable to do this.   But rather than abandon the project, we have been able to gain skills and experience by volunteering to help prepare the IT equipment that SERC is loaning out to students so they can continue with their studies during lockdown.  It means that I am getting practical experience of installing operating systems, configuring encryption and security systems.  This is something I will be able to add to my CV, plus I feel I am giving something back to help my peers with their studies. 

Chris concluded, “My time at SERC has provided me the knowledge and skills to be able to perform practical IT tasks. I am not just learning the theory of IT but putting it into action.  

“I would definitely recommend SERC to anyone that is considering coming to the College as the facilities are great and the help you receive from tutors is incredible”
