Rhys McClenaghan, a former sports student at SERC, has secured his place in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan after an outstanding performance at the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

The 20 year old from Newtownards has become the first Irish gymnast to make the World Gymnastics Championships finals following his performance on Sunday on the Pommel Horse with an impressive mark of 15.200. This clinched him a place in the 2020 Olympic Games.

McClenaghan has previously won the Commonwealth and European titles in 2018. However, a shoulder injury saw him ruled out of last year's World Championships.

Ken Webb, SERC Chief Executive and Principal said, “This is an outstanding achievement, not only has Rhys reached the final World Gymnastics Championships but to also qualify for the Olympic Games in process, he should be extremely proud of himself. Rhys is an inspiration for current and future students of just how much you can achieve though hard work, determination and strength of character.”

He concluded, “I wish Rhys all the best at the finals on Saturday and in his training for the Olympic Games, he has the support from all of us here at SERC.”

Rhys will compete in the pommel horse final on Saturday October 12, where the finals will begin at 3pm.
