Twenty-six-year-old Alexander Wallace from Carrowdore found that the apprenticeship route was the best course to help him secure employment.

Alexander, who followed his A Levels at Regent House with a degree in Communication Information Technologies at Ulster University, found his career route difficult to navigate on graduation.   He said, “I found it hard to secure employment due to my lack of work experience in the IT industry. It was then I discovered that I could do an apprenticeship though SERC.

“I am currently employed by Building Protection Systems (BPS), completing a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Fire and Security Engineering to be a qualified fire alarm engineer. The apprenticeship has given me a route into a job where I can earn and continue to learn and am working in a growth industry.   My employer, BPS is very supportive of my work and studies and I plan to say with them, hopefully working my way through the ranks, to gain more experience and more responsibility.”

Speaking about the apprenticeship route and coming to SERC Alexander said, “I would encourage anyone who is deciding what they want to do after GCSE’s or A Levels to look at the apprenticeship route.   I strongly recommend this route.   If there is an apprenticeship for the work or industry which interests you, then go for it.   Once you complete your apprenticeship you can progress to further studies, work or both, but this way you are learning whilst you earn and there is more support if you need it.”

To find out more about SERC Apprenticeships, make sure to check out our Apprenticeship Week events from the 26th to the 30th of April.
