Students’ Union President, Alex Fox is getting set for a fight fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The theme of South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) recent refreshers was Give It A Go, and when Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was showcased at the Bangor Campus, Students’ Union President, Alex Fox did just that, and now he is getting set for a fight fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Speaking about taking up the sport Alex said, “I’ve enjoyed it a lot, I am new to the world of MMA, but I’m not a complete novice to combat sports. It’s been quite a while since I’ve participated, so it’s been great to rekindle that fire to compete.

Alex talking about the challenges MMA poses “It’s been much more challenging than I originally perceived, I have a joint condition, and although it doesn’t hinder my ability to participate or effect my physical performance, it does mean that when I walk away from a session I can be sore for days, but as far as I’m concerned whatever little physical pain I’m feeling is nothing compared to the really good cause I’m doing it for."

Alex will step in the octagon for his first MMA bout on April 25th, at the Crowne Plaza, Belfast. No matter which competitor has their hand raised at the end of the contest, there’s no doubt charity will be the real winner, as all proceeds raised from the event will go to Cancer Research UK. The event is organised by Ultra MMA, who have raised £1,321,149 for Cancer Research UK.

If you would like to support Alex’s efforts and donate to Cancer Research UK, you can do so by donating to Alex in person, as mentioned before Alex is the SU President and is based in our Bangor campus, you can also donate via the Just Giving page.
