There’s nothing quite like how we start the year with gusto at SERC each September – and this year has been no exception! We say farewell to our amazing students at our Graduation Ceremony and welcome new and continuing student with Enterprise Showcase Fortnight (quickly followed by Freshers’ Week!)

Well done to the hundreds of students from across Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses who took part in the Enterprise Showcase sessions this week.   If you were in the hall at any of the Showcase events you will have experienced the buzz about the innovative, creative, enterprising and entrepreneurial student ideas for Sustainability, Healthy Living and Learning under the themes of Food, Upcycling, Reduced Wasted, Business and the Environment, Exercise and Activity, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, Energy Conservation and Mindfulness.

Dr Michael Malone, Director of Curriculum and Information Services said, “The quality of the student work is of a very high standard and communication skills also exceptional. There was a great atmosphere created in the room and a very positive and happy buzz with students working on projects ranging from healthy food and drinks, to apps for health and fitness and reducing obesity, to recycling plastics, to a day centre and activity plan for seniors (pictured above) to a medical sheep crush through to reducing the impact of diabetes.

He added, “This year we invited more external judges onto all campuses and the feedback from these very experienced business and industry representatives has been outstanding. They specifically commented on the quality of the work, how the students engaged with them, made eye contact and talked fluently about their project and how so much has been achieved in such a short time.”

Shortlisted projects will be invited to the Showcase Final on Tuesday 18th September at SERC Bangor Campus where students will have the opportunity to ‘pitch’ their ideas to the judging panel.  The event will be live streamed (details to follow).   Good luck to everyone.
