Each year, the SERC Enterprise, Entrepreneurship and Environment (EEE) team at SERC promote and recruit Eco Committees across our campuses. In past years, there has been a recruitment phase at the start of the year, resulting in a closed team who develop projects throughout the year.

This year, the EEE team want to open the Committee to allow more students to get involved around their other commitments. Going forward, any interested individual can join the ‘Cross Campus Eco Community’ Microsoft Team and jump into the activities or projects that interest them. Students can also propose their own projects and those who take part in an activity or project will receive a certificate. Join the team by clicking here. Students also get access to regular updates on activities and projects, allowing you to get involved in what inspires you when it suits you. You can also share your eco hacks and ideas or browse those posted by others.

This new direction for the Committee has come from the desire to support as many eco projects to flourish as possible, recognising that different individuals have different interests, skillsets and availability. Some people want to upcycle pre-loved fashion into creative new garments; others want to get outside and plant trees or carry out litter picks; while others want to put their writing or creative media skills to use on blogs and videos. We want to connect you with the people and projects that inspire you.

Speaking about her time on the Eco Committee in 2020-21, SERC graduate Mollie Richardson said, “I enjoyed everything about being part of the Eco Committee, but particularly enjoyed having the chance to work with people on projects that could make a real impact, whilst having lots to add to my CV.

“I had experiences in graphic design, leadership, writing for the Eco blog and coordinating projects, all which increased my confidence in myself and the skills I used.

“The mask campaign I helped lead saw different SERC campuses setting up stands to hand out reusable masks and post on social media to encourage safer and more environmentally friendly use of face masks. I got the chance to set up a little team of people to work on the campaign with me, gaining great organisational and leadership skills.

“I was also able to design stickers for ‘talking bins’, which were set up on the Lisburn campus and at the Lisburn bus station. The official launch and having my graphic design abilities displayed was a fantastic opportunity.”
