It’s business as usual for SERC as our teachers and students adapt to online learning platforms to continue educating and learning. Heather Gyle, Associate Lecturer in Sociology, School of Health, Early Years and Adult Education, is one such lecturer, as she made use of Microsoft Teams for communication and Nearpod, an instructional platform for formative assessment, to teach her class.

Heather comments, “Nearpod is a student engagement platform, that makes learning fun. Through Nearpod it is easy to create presentations, assessments and collaborative boards. It is even possible to go on a field trip! Students access the content created by teachers directly or through channels such as Microsoft Teams using mobile phones or any other mobile device.

During the move to online learning and teaching through Microsoft Teams, I found many students lost their voice and tended to be fairly quiet during classes with very little interaction.  Nearpod has enabled the students to engage more with content, collaborate using the Nearpod collaboration boards and interact more with the class. Lessons are now much livelier and more engaging.  I would recommend Nearpod to liven up classes and support student engagement.  Contact the Learning Academy for more information on Nearpod.”
