SERC Computing student Douglas Robinson is working towards his dream career in cyber security.

Douglas completed his GCSEs at Dromore High School before coming to SERC to study on the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in IT (Years 1 and 2), along with Essential Skills. He has since progressed to the Pearson BTEC HND in Computing (Software and Games Development). Douglas decided to study at SERC after attending a Full Time open evening and talking to the Computing department about SERC Computing courses, as well as doing his own research and looking up the positive reviews of the SERC courses he was interested in.

Of his time at SERC Douglas says, “I’d absolutely recommend the SERC experience. SERC will give you a lot of one-to-one tuition with the course tutor, unlike university which is more focused on independent learning. I found having the dedicated interaction with the tutor to be very helpful, especially in gaining further knowledge on the specific course areas I’m interested in”.

Douglas continues, “I have gained a lot of knowledge in the practical units but loved the theory too, and how they are both efficiently blended into the course. I liked analysing and creating databases and excel spreadsheets. I also attended after-school courses at SERC, which allowed me to gain further information on my units of study and was very beneficial.”

Douglas concludes, “I definitely recommend SERC. To anyone thinking of studying here, attending an open evening and talking to the tutors and careers advisors is a great way to help you make that decision to study, especially backe up with your own research and seeing what is right for you. I planto move on to a top-up degree in SERC, preferably in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics as I would love to specialise in that field and broaden my knowledge on programming and software development. One day I’d love to work as a cyber security analyst/specialist, and SERC is setting me on the path towards that goal.”
