We all know how important it is to learn first aid basics, but did you know that our SERC’s Level 2 Animal Care students learn the same for animals?

Animal Care Lecturer, Diane McKay said, “As part of the Level 2 Animal Care course, students learn how to deal with a range of first aid scenarios.   This might entail dealing with injuries requiring bandaging, CPR or treating burns – one of the most common injuries for cats and dogs in the home, usually involving spillages of hot drinks."

“When we cover CPR we use CasPeR, our CPR dog manikin.   This a valuable resource and an important teaching aid, which gives students the opportunity to perform mouth to snout resuscitation, whilst learning correct hand placement and depth for chest compressions."

She added, “It is important for the students to develop confidence by practising on real animals, so the students particularly enjoy it when first aid involves a ‘live patient’.  On this occasion, my 8-month-old golden retriever, Brody, was only too willing to take on the role whilst the students practised bandaging different wound scenarios.”
