Group of aspiring managers in classroom setting.

The Learning Academy has developed a programme for staff who are keen to pursue a management role called the Aspiring Manager Programme.

What is it?
The Aspiring Manager Programme (AMP) has been designed to enable staff to develop the skills and confidence to progress into a management role. The AMP provides an opportunity to network and build working relationships across the College and to better understand the dynamics of management within the context of SERC and its core values. Participants will complete a CMI Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Management and Leadership on successful submission of the assignments.

How is the programme structured?
The programme includes interactive workshops, work shadowing opportunities (optional) and a group collaborative project. Staff will be assigned a mentor from the College Management Team (CMT) who will support and the group to develop and implement their collaborative project. Participants are required to attend training sessions  (speak to you line manager about cover), and to devote time outside of these sessions to reflect on their learning.   AMP brochure 24_25 prog.docx

Who is it for?
This programme is suitable for staff who are keen to pursue a future management role. You will need to be available (or arrange cover) on the following dates to attend the sessions typically delivered on a Monday afternoon with three classes on Thursday, and one Tuesday. Please read the schedule attached for the specific dates and times.

How will staff apply?
During the application period interested staff should, following a discussion with their line manager, download and complete an Expression of Interest Form (EOI Aspiring Manager Programme Jan 2025.docx). Including having it approved by their line manager and return it to HR@serc.ac.uk before 12 noon on Friday 7th  February 2025.  Successful applicants will be allocated a cohort and start date (24th February). Spaces are limited so ensuring the expression of interest will be used to select staff if the course is over subscribed.

How is it assessed?
Participants will be required to complete two assignments. The first will focus on Principles of Management and Leadership (Unit 301) and the second on Managing a Team to Achieve Results (Unit 302). For the second assignment, participants will complete a small group project to apply learning from taught sessions and submit an assignment. This will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively with peers,  requiring communication and collaboration across units and departments within SERC.

What do I need to do as the manager?
To maximise the benefit from participating on the AMP, managers will need to consider if they can support the application at this time, or whether they would prefer you to complete it at later date. If you are supporting the application staff will be starting the course on Monday 24th February 2025.
