Patrick Gordon

Patrick Gordon, (18)  from Banbridge,  completed his GCSEs at Newbridge Integrated College before coming to SERC to focus on science.

Patrick said, “Science was the only subject I really enjoyed, so it made sense for me to concentrate on this area.   I did a bit of research and found that SERC offered a Level 3 in Applied Science - equivalent to three A Levels. I came along to an open day and met some of the tutors and this gave me all the information I needed to make my decision and so I applied almost immediately.   I travel about 50 miles each day to get to campus but it’s worth it.

“The best part of the course is the teaching.   It feels like we are being taught one to one, even though there are other people in the class, it feels like they are just talking to you – all the lecturers are amazing.

“We cover a lot in the course.   In first year, we did microbiology and a lot of chemistry. This year we are covering biology, chemistry and physics and there is an investigation project you work on from September through to January. My favourite subject is biology.  I like finding out how everything works and how it can be applied to everyday life, for example one of the projects I was working on focussed on the growth of fungi.   It has applications for homes, for example in bathrooms and kitchens, where someone might have a mould issue and how they could alleviate the issue without using chemicals.

“A large part of the course is theory, but this is all supported by practical sessions each week which are great fun. We write them up after, so there is time to reflect on what you were doing and I have found it gives me a great sense of achievement. The facilities in the science department are fantastic.

“I am particularly interested in progressing to study Podiatry, perhaps at Ulster University.   This interest in this area stemmed from a project I did in college last year.   There are different areas in which you can specialise so that is what I am thinking about at the minute.”

Speaking about his advice for other people thinking of doing the course, Patrick said, “If you are particularly interested in the three sciences, I would say this is a great course.”

Apply now for courses commencing September 2025.  Come along to our full-time open evening from 4.00pm – 7.00pm on Thursday 6 March at our Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
