South Eastern Regional College (SERC) students from Level 3 NVQ Barbering at the Bangor and Lisburn campuses recently sharpened their barbering talent at an intercampus competition, held at the Lisburn Campus Revive salon.
Given the task of creating a ‘street style’ gentleman’s commercial haircut on their models, the students competed to demonstrate their creativity and skills. The final results were then judged by two barbering professionals, including Jack Greer, a former SERC Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ Barbering student, who is currently employed with Cut ‘n’ Grind salon in Lisburn, and Aidan Turley, a professional barber based at Bradley Larkin Hair in Belfast.
Blaine McKeown (Lisburn campus) was celebrating after taking home first place, followed by Jonny Murray (Bangor campus) who took home second place, and Sam Gordon (Bangor campus), who took home third place.
Martha Craig, Deputy Head of School, Performing and Creative Arts said, “The Barbering intercampus competition was linked to the students’ vocational study unit, so as well as competing in the competition, they also achieved an assessment. Congratulations to the three winners, Blaine, Jonny, and Sam, and well done to all the students who took part on the day.”
Blaine McKeown, first place winner commented, “I had a really enjoyable experience taking part in the barbering intercampus competition and was very pleased with being awarded first place. All of the staff and judges were friendly, and I felt that the competition ran very smoothly.”
