Why Study This Course

This course is designed to take your barbering skills to the next level and prepare you for a career as a senior barber. The qualification builds on existing knowledge and understanding of barbering and develops more detailed and enhanced technical skills necessary for employment.

There is a hands-on approach to this course where you will gain experience in the college barber salons of Shadeka and Revive and is enriched with opportunities to visit the professional trade show in Dublin, and receive specialist skills delivered by external companies such as Wahl and Osmo and numerous demonstrations from successful Barbers across the province.

In the college barber shop you will learn how to create a variety of looks using advanced cutting techniques, how to carryout an open blade shave, how to create patterns in the hair, and how to plan and promote events in the salons to be able to survive in this competitive industry.

Course Overview

The course will be delivered on campus 15 hours per week and will consist of:

A level 3 Diploma in Barbering

Employability qualification

Level 2 Essential Skills in numeracy and literacy (if required)

Participation in the college commercial salon

You will need:

NVQ Level 2 Barbering and successful outcome at skills test and interview

Students who do not have at least grade C in Maths and English will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

Students will be required to purchase a uniform and kit to include 2 training heads; staff will provide information at interviews.

Units will include:

Provide client consultation services
Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
Provide shaving services
Colour and lighten men’s hair
Design and create patterns in hair

Successful completion will allow you to progress onto employment or further study of gaining NVQ level 3 Diploma in hairdressing.

I suppose I thought I was going to learn just to cut hair, but there is so much more to it, and by the time you move up from Level 2 to Level 3, you cover colour, design and cutthroat shaving.
