This course covers the operating principles and components of the automotive A/C system and their functions, and the correct use of the equipment used to service modern A/C systems.

Relevant experience working in motor trade.

  • Know about the operation of A/C systems in motor vehicles 
  • Know about the use and properties of the fluorinated greenhouse gases used as refrigerants in A/C systems in motor vehicles and the impact of the emissions of these gases on the environment (order of magnitude of their global warming potential in relation to climate change) 
  • Understand the relevant provisions of regulation (EC) No 842/2006 and Directive 2006/40/EC 
  • Know the common procedures for recovering fluorinated greenhouse gases 
  • Be able to demonstrate how to handle a refrigerant cylinder 
  • Be able to connect and disconnect a recovery set to and from the service ports of a motor vehicle A/C system containing fluorinated greenhouse gases 
  • Be able to operate a recovery set

You aspire to be a Defra-approved automotive Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) technicians meeting the minimum F-gas requirement (EC842/2006 and annex EC307/2008).

The Learner will: 

  • Know about the operation of A/C systems in motor vehicles 
  • Know about the use and properties of the fluorinated greenhouse gases used as refrigerants in A/C systems in motor vehicles and the impact of the emissions of these gases on the environment (order of magnitude of their global warming potential in relation to climate change)

This course will further the understanding of the operation of automotive air conditioning systems and raise awareness of the environmental implications attached to them. It will also look at some of the real-world issues when dealing with MAC systems

Successful candidates will be issued with a certificate which shows they are compliant. It will underpin and enhance a working knowledge of MAC systems and is a natural progression to the level 4 qualification which delves more deeply into system diagnosis.
