Why Study This Course

This course is aimed at 16 year olds who have just left school having obtained their GCSE's.  Students will learn and develop skills in relation to preparing backgrounds eg forming sand and cement screeds, for tiling wall and floor surfaces.  This course offers experience with the necessary equipment to learn about tiling, and students will benefit from the practical nature of teaching.

Students must secure employment in the trade prior to enrolment and want to pursue a career in wall and floor tiling.

Course Overview

This 2 year apprenticeship is delivered through a blend of practical on-the-job training and classroom-based learning.

Apprentices will spend most of their time (3 to 4 days per week) working with an employer, gaining valuable industry experience while attending college (1 to 2 days per week) or a training provider for theoretical lessons. The course includes assessments, practical tasks and exams to ensure competency in wall and floor tiling skills.

You will need:

  • a minimum of 5 GCSEs including at least Grade D in English and Maths
  • to have secured an employer in the trade
  • to undertake a skills aptitude test

Students will be able to upgrade their English and Maths to Essential Skills Level 2 or GCSE Grade C if required.

OCN NI Level 2 Diploma in Wet Trades

Modules include:

  • Health and Safety in the Wet Trades Industry
  • Understand Building Construction Materials and Methods
  • Preparing Backgrounds for Wall and Floor Tiling
  • Tiling Wall Surfaces
  • Tiling Floor Surfaces
  • Laying Sand and Cement Floor Screeds

Progression can lead to employment in the trade, or on to further advanced studies.
