CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership in Practice
The CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic leadership and Management practice is designed for Managers who are already operating at the strategic level.
Candidates will complete the following units:
Unit 701: Strategic Leadership
The aim of this unit is to equip leaders with an in-depth understanding of strategic leadership within an organisational context. Leaders will explore the complexities of the role and the theoretical perspectives, approaches, behaviours and skills which can enhance their professional practice. The unit focuses on the leader’s ability to respond creatively to complex organisational challenges and understand how to set and deliver sustainable strategic goals.
Unit 712: Strategic Management Project
The aim of this unit is for leaders to undertake a strategic management project of their own choosing. To achieve this outcome leaders will develop a business case, propose research design to inform the project’s direction and recommend project management methods and tools to structure the delivery of the project. Leaders will report on project outcomes and reflect on the skills and behaviours which ultimately influence the success of the strategic management project
General Entry Requirements
The general entry requirements below identify the minimum qualifications needed to apply for the programme. Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis on application. You are required to upload a copy of your qualification certificates to show how you meet the entry requirements for the programme prior to enrolment. Applications will also require successful completion of the admissions process.
GCSE/ Level 2 Requirements
GCSE grade C/4 in English Language, or Level 2 Certificate in Essential Skills- Communication, or equivalent in an approved alternative qualification.
Course Entry Requirements
Candidates are required to demonstrate the following to be considered for a place on the programme, in addition to the entry requirements candidates will undergo an interview to assess suitability on the programme.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in a senior management role,
Or
- A minimum of 5 years experience as a middle managerial role, for example: operations manager, divisional manager, departmental manager, regional manager, specialist manager, e.g. HR manager/Business partner; finance manager, production manager, procurement manager, etc.
Or
- A Business Owner
And
- Hold a Degree or equivalent qualification (Level 6) or recently completed a CMI Level 5 Qualification or similar to a very high standard
Accreditation of Prior Learning
Alternatively, you can provide evidence of your ability to undertake the programme by meeting the requirements for the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process, either through Accredited Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or Accredited Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). International Students English Language Requirements
International applicants, from Non-Native English-speaking countries, must have evidence of English Language Level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
- IELTS 6.0 (Academic) (minimum of 5.5 in all skills)
- PTE Academic 51 (minimum of 46 in each part)

Candidates are required to complete two 4500-5000 words written reports to complete the qualification, one of which is Strategic project. Candidates will be provided with individual one to one mentoring to support the development of their strategic projects and their personal development on the programme.
Students that successfully complete this programme find that they are able to further develop their skills and behaviours as a strategic leader. Students that wish to further their studies may undertake a related qualification, either at a university or at SERC.
This CMI course aims to delivering learning that is rooted in the real world and to develop individuals with the professional skills and behaviours that employers need.
On completion candidates may wish to be considered as a CMI Chartered Manager through the formal submission process. SERC is an accredited Chartered Manager centre so can facilitate this.
