The SERC Students’ Union recently welcomed the Rainbow Project’s Leo Lardie to SERC Bangor Campus to give a talk on the history of Pride.

The Rainbow Project is a non-profit organization that promotes the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people and their families in Northern Ireland. Leo’s talk, organised by the SERC SU Bangor Pride Society, was held in the SERC Bangor Campus central hall.

During the talk, Leo spoke about the history and importance of Pride, exploring the origins, evolution, and significance of the celebration within the LGBTQ+ community. It began by tracing Pride's roots to the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. The talk then discussed the growth of Pride parades in the UK and Ireland as celebrations of visibility, diversity, and resilience. Leo concluded with a call to action, reminding students of the enduring relevance of Pride as a symbol of love, inclusion, and justice.

The SERC SU Bangor Pride Society meets every Wednesday 12pm-2pm in D25a – students are encouraged to join to learn and make new friends. As societies begin to launch more events, it’s never been a better time to join the SERC SU and its many clubs. For more information on joining a club, email studentsunion@serc.ac.uk.
