The book club based at SERC Bangor Campus LRC was delighted to welcome local poet, Gifford Savage, to the college, where he read from his work and discussed the creative writing process.
A full room enjoyed hearing poems and reading recommendations, as well as advice and encouragement for aspiring writers.
The visit was hosted by The Inkwell Editorials, a group meeting at Bangor LRC which has been the driving force behind “The Inkwell Journal”. This online publication showcases the talent of present and past students of SERC, from the written word in various forms, to artwork. Copies of the Inkwell Journal are available at each LRC, and the publication won praise from their visitor Gifford Savage.
Book clubs are developing in the Learning Resource Centres across the main campuses, drawing together students with a shared love of reading and/or writing. The poetry event and the book clubs are some of a range of initiatives to encourage student use of the library spaces for different cultural activities.
After Gifford Savage’s visit, SERC LRC Manager David Greer said, “Gifford’s talk was entertaining and inspiring – and I was also inspired to see so many students attending and asking thought-provoking questions during the event. We want all our students to feel that the library spaces are there to be used, delivering an added dimension to their learning journey with opportunities to share activities with other like-minded people.
"Also in the pipeline is a Manga book club, inspired by the sizeable collection of manga zines donated to our Fabulous Fiction Trust Library here in Bangor Campus. It’s not only about books. You provide the idea, we’ll provide the space! There is more on offer at each LRC than students may think.”
Proving David Greer’s point, Level 3 Art and Design students have been showcasing (and selling) their photographs in Bangor Campus LRC, to coincide with the campus Christmas market.
