SERC welcome Ards Scouts as they enjoy a taste of college life

As part of their commitment to working with the local community, SERC has teamed up with local community groups and clubs to offer young people a range of Master Class Taster Sessions.

The aim of the taster programmes is to engage young people in a diverse range of course taster sessions, allowing them to experience first-hand the high quality of teaching and learning available at SERC. Most recently the college welcomed young people from the 2nd Ards Scouts Group.

The scouts took part in a 2 hour cookery taster evening. Donning aprons and hair nets, the boys tried their hand at making a chicken curry at the colleges Bangor Campus. The evening allowed the young people to develop their cookery skills. The boys will be replicating these skills when they hold a fundraising curry night soon.

SERC tutors ran the sessions and were on hand to answer all the young people’s questions about courses and learning options available to them.

SERC director of strategic planning Heather McKee said “We’re really pleased to be working in partnership with the local community to offer a wide range of taster sessions. Young people don’t always know what courses or learning opportunities are available at SERC, so these sessions will give young people the opportunity to experience college life within a casual setting. Amidst the fun of the hands-on approach to learning, participants got the unique opportunity to learn new life skills, firing their imagination and giving them an insight into college life.”

Staff members were delighted with the students’ diligence and can-do attitude. Thomas McCluney from the school of hospitality, management, tourism and languages assisted the Scouts during their visit to SERC and said “the boys did extremely well and where really enthusiastic throughout the evening. They displayed some great culinary skills and produced some very tasty dishes.”
