“I did my A-Levels in Public Services, Art and Design and IT at Strangford College, and after finishing school I was quite torn on whether to follow similar routes to my friends or continue my interest in computing. I had visited SERC previously after doing my GCSEs to find out about the options they had at the Bangor campus, and I was very interested in the computing courses after A-Level. Trusting my instincts, I came back after getting my results and enrolled on the Level 4 HNC Computing course.”

“I am currently in my first year of the course, and I definitely made the right decision in choosing this pathway. I have loved my course so far, and I really enjoy coming on to campus and socialising with new people. My favourite modules have been software and lifecycles, and programming as these are the areas I prefer. My tutors Ryan Major, Richard Sittlington and Claire Clarke have been really great and always support me when I need help, if I have fallen behind on work, or even if I’ve had a bad day and need someone to talk to. This has been very helpful and definitely encourages us to keep working hard. It has been a big leap from A-Levels but, although it has been stressful at times, SERC has very good support systems in place to keep me going.”

“I really encourage them to go for it if they want to do it as a career. Don’t let friends or anyone else’s opinions hold you back, do what is right for you and what makes you happy. SERC is a great place to be, and if you put your mind to things you will succeed.”

“Right now, I am just taking every day as it comes and putting in the hard work that’ll take me to where I want to be. I am very happy where I am right now, and excited about where I’ll progress in the next few years. I have another year on the course and am working towards achieving my HND in 2024. After this, I would be interested in doing the top up degree potentially in Cyber Security.”
